Big and Little Choices

Some of our US readers are experiencing a great sense of victory or defeat today. At this point, like it or not, the big choice is made.

But it’s not all about the big choice.

“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.”

Matthew 13:31-33 NIV

Jesus taught us to pray that the kingdom would come “on earth as it is in heaven.”

I love these parables because they lend a wonderful sense that heaven will sneak up on us. Like when you have an injury and all you can think about is the pain it causes you, then one day you say, “hey, my knee doesn’t hurt anymore” or “my cut healed” and you wonder how long you have been better.

I believe the kingdom will come to earth more readily through our little choices than our big ones. How we use our votes matters. Just not as much as how we use our prayers, words, attention, money, and our minutes. For better or worse, through a series of little (perhaps seemingly inconsequential) choices, you have more of an opportunity to impact the lives of the people close to you today than the next administration will in four years.

Mustard seed faith will move mountains. What seeds will you plant?
